Nosy Komba is a small, volcanic lump of green rising out of the sapphire waters of the Nosy Be Archipelago off northwestern Madagascar. There are no paved roads. There are no cars. The local transit consists of wooden pirogues and your own two feet.

You land at Nosy Be airport, meet your driver, and head to the harbour. From there, a private boat cuts across twenty minutes of open ocean toward a four-room lodge called 293 on Komba. For sixteen years the lodge was run by Marcine, a local legend who knew every fisherman, lemur and tide cycle by name. Today, the sanctuary belongs to Danielle, who first arrived as a guest and kept coming back, year after year, until the island simply wouldn't let her leave. 
Danielle builds her days around adventure. She is just as likely to drag you on a sunrise hike to the island's summit as she is to arrange a trip to hidden jungle chocolate producers or paddle out to where the turtles feed. Guests usually describe her less as a host and more as a willing co-conspirator in their holiday.

Nosy Komba casts a spell on you, the kind that works quietly until you catch yourself pricing local real estate, or wondering, with slightly too much seriousness, what the visa rules are for someone who simply never leaves. Breakfast isn't a silver chafing dish of rubbery eggs; it's freshly baked
bread, local honey, seasonal fruit picked that morning, and fruit
smoothies. Dinner is whatever came off the local fishing boats a few
hours earlier.

During the day, you can hop a boat over to Nosy Tanikely to snorkel over pristine coral gardens with green sea turtles, or head to the village of Ampangorina to buy hand-stitched table linens. At night, you sit in the splash pool perched over the bay, drink something cold, and listen to the island silence.
